Jack Russell Terriers were bred to hunt small animals such as, rabbits, foxes, rodents and squirrels. Their keen sense of hearing and smell often gets the best of them when they smell or hear something even if it is underground. They will sometimes become obsessive in their effort to get it. I have had some experience with Jack Russell’s on a friends farm in Southern California. She owned 5 of them, and I have to say they are a highly intelligent sturdy breed of dog. Jack Russell’s will keep you entertained for hours with their clownish personality. Not to underestimate their high energy levels, these little balls of spunky fun will go for hours without wearing out.
I’m wondering if maybe you have an uninvited guest under or behind your refrigerator. Some times mice or rats will set up housekeeping in these areas of our home or in our walls. They leave a urine trail when traveling along baseboards or inside wall beams to tell others of their territory. Sometimes they will chew their way in, through a wall or vent area from outside of the home. Some houses are not built on cement slabs and have a crawl space under the home, which is a great hiding place or home for many different types of small animals such as possums, raccoons and rodents. Your Jack Russell might be telling you of them when he is scratching at the floor as if to dig to get at them. Of coarse
he might also have had his favorite toy roll behind the refrigerator also, he knows it’s their and he can smell it but can’t seem to get at it. I hope you let us know how this turns out, toy verses mouse scenario. We will look forward to hearing from you John.

I have to admit that my wife and I were horrified to think a mouse or worse was behind this whole dog floor scratching behavior. But we took your advice and we are glad we did! We have an intruder,we are not sure if its a mouse or rat. I can tell you there was a lot of little droppings in the far corner behind the refrigerator and a small hole that leads out to our garage. Thank you for helping us with this dilemma. We are very grateful and will tell others about this truly wonderful site.
