Dear Bark Zone, I feed my dog Pedigree store bought dog food. I'm thinking on changing to a more natural dog food. Do you know of any good Raw diets for dogs?

I recently purchased a Jack Russell Terrier, he is about 1 ½ old. The minute we brought him home, he started scratching at the bottom of the refrigerator grill. He does this for long periods of time. Do you know why he has this sort of behavior?

Jack Russell Terriers were bred to hunt small animals such as, rabbits, foxes, rodents and squirrels. Their keen sense of hearing and smell often gets the best of them when they smell or hear something even if it is underground. They will sometimes become obsessive in their effort to get it. I have had some experience with Jack Russell’s on a friends farm in Southern California. She owned 5 of them, and I have to say they are a highly intelligent sturdy breed of dog. Jack Russell’s will keep you entertained for hours with their clownish personality. Not to underestimate their high energy levels, these little balls of spunky fun will go for hours without wearing out.

I’m wondering if maybe you have an uninvited guest under or behind your refrigerator. Some times mice or rats will set up housekeeping in these areas of our home or in our walls. They leave a urine trail when traveling along baseboards or inside wall beams to tell others of their territory. Sometimes they will chew their way in, through a wall or vent area from outside of the home. Some houses are not built on cement slabs and have a crawl space under the home, which is a great hiding place or home for many different types of small animals such as possums, raccoons and rodents. Your Jack Russell might be telling you of them when he is scratching at the floor as if to dig to get at them. Of coarse he might also have had his favorite toy roll behind the refrigerator also, he knows it’s their and he can smell it but can’t seem to get at it. I hope you let us know how this turns out, toy verses mouse scenario. We will look forward to hearing from you John.

I have to admit that my wife and I were horrified to think a mouse or worse was behind this whole dog floor scratching behavior. But we took your advice and we are glad we did! We have an intruder,we are not sure if its a mouse or rat. I can tell you there was a lot of little droppings in the far corner behind the refrigerator and a small hole that leads out to our garage. Thank you for helping us with this dilemma. We are very grateful and will tell others about this truly wonderful site.

Can My dog have allergy’s?
I have a terrier that constantly bites at his rear. We have him on a flea treatment so I do not think it is fleas. He will bite until the area becomes raw and hair loss has occurred. What can cause this?

Allergies in Dogs

One of the most common conditions affecting dogs is allergy. In the allergic state, the dog's immune system overreacts
to foreign substances allergens or antigens to which it is exposed. These overreactions are manifested in three ways. The most common is itching of the skin, either localized one area or generalized all over the dog. Another manifestation involves the respiratory system and may result in coughing, sneezing, and/or wheezing. Sometimes, there may be an associated nasal or ocular eye discharge. The third manifestation involves the digestive system, resulting in vomiting or diarrhea.

Contact allergy - local reaction of the skin caused by a flea collar, types of bedding
such as pine or wool. The itchy skin or irritation will be at the point of contact. Removal of the contact irritant solves the problem. However, identifying the allergen can require some detective work.

Bacterial Allergy - Staph (Staphyococcus), bacterium is found in normal dog skin.  If the skin is normal and the dog's immune system is normal, Staph causes no problems to its host. However, some dogs develop an allergy to this bacterium. When this happens, the dog develops areas of hair loss that look much like ringworm. They are often round and 1/2 to 2 inches in diameter. These same lesions develop in true Staph infection; they are easily treated with certain antibiotics, but the Staph-allergic dog has recurrent "Staph infections." The lesions will usually clear with appropriate antibiotics but return as soon as antibiotics are discontinued. After a while, some dogs become resistant to antibiotic treatment.

Flea Allergy - Flea allergy is common in dogs. A normal dog experiences only minor irritation in response to flea bites, often without any itching. On the other hand, the flea allergic dog has a severe, itch-producing reaction when the flea's saliva is deposited in the skin. Just one bite causes such intense itching that the dog may severely scratch or chew itself, leading to the removal of large amounts of hair. There will often be open sores or scabs on the skin, allowing a secondary bacterial infection to begin. The area most commonly involved is over the rump (just in front of the tail). Even if your dog is on a flea regimen, as with most flea applications the flea has to bite the host first and ingest the flea prevention medicine before the flea will die.

Inhalant Allergy - The most common type of allergy is the inhalant type. Dogs may be allergic to all of the same inhaled allergens that affect humans. These include tree pollens cedar, ash, oak, etc., grass pollens (especially Bermuda), weed pollens ragweed, etc., molds, mildew, and the house dust mite. Many of these allergies occur seasonally, such as ragweed, cedar, and grass pollens. However, others are with us all the time, such as molds, mildew, and house dust mites. When humans inhale these allergens, we express the allergy as a respiratory problem; it is sometimes called "hay fever." The dog's reaction, however, usually produces severe, generalized itching. In fact, the most common cause of itching in the dog is inhalant allergy.

Food Allergy - Dogs are not likely to be born with food allergies. More commonly, they develop allergies to food products they have eaten for a long time. The allergy most frequently develops in response to the protein component of the food; for example, beef, pork, chicken, or turkey. I have also seen dogs allergic to wheat & corn ingredients in dog food over the years. Food allergy may produce any of the clinical signs previously discussed, including itching, digestive disorders, and respiratory distress. Recommend testing for food allergy when the clinical signs have been present for several months, when the dog has a poor response to steroids, or when a very young dog itches without other apparent causes of allergy. Testing is done with a special hypoallergenic diet. Because it takes at least 8 weeks for all other food products to get out of the system, the dog must eat the special diet exclusively for 8-12 weeks or more. If a positive response occurs, you will be instructed on how to proceed by your Veterinarian.
